SUMMARY:SRI LANKA: Interrupted
DESCRIPTION:JOIN US on June 25 for our Arts Exhibition marking The United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. Through diverse artistic expression\, we aim to shed light on the ongoing struggle for justice in Sri Lanka and spark meaningful conversations about human rights\, justice\, and accountability. \nBackground: \nThe United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture is held annually on 26 June\, the day following our Exhibition. Torture denies the inherent dignity of human beings and despite being prohibited under international law\, continues to persist in all regions of the world. In Sri Lanka\, the use of torture is alarmingly prevalent among law enforcement\, security forces and prison officials\, labelled as  ‘routine and systemic’ by UN experts. A 2020 report by the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka revealed that 84% of prisoners under the Prevention of Terrorism Act were tortured after arrest and held for between five and ten years without trial. Since then\, there has been a disturbing increase in the harassment\, surveillance and arbitrary detentions of Tamils\, journalists\, and activists. SUMMARY:Anatomy of a Protest
DESCRIPTION:The Sri Lanka Campaign\, International Working Group and Retold World will be hosting a private screening of Kannan Arunasalam’s latest feature documentary\, ‘Anatomy of a Protest’ (73 mins) to be shown at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) on Monday\, 17 June\, 2024\, 6.30pm — 8.00pm. \nThis new film\, following on from Kannan’s previous documentary\, the award winning ‘Sri Lanka’s Rebel Wife’\, follows the rise and fall of Sri Lanka’s Aragalaya movement (or “struggle”) — the non-violent\, popular protest movement that forced Sri Lanka’s feared and revered president\, Gotabaya Rajapaksa\, to step down and flee the country in 2022. The film tells the story from the unique perspective of some of the central activists involved. Can their fight against a corrupt dynasty overcome a system determined to prevail? \nThe screening will be followed by a panel discussion. We have the privilege of presenting the director\, central characters in the film and those who bring direct insights into the protest movement and Sri Lanka’s economic crisis. \nPlease use this LINK to register.
